This & That

I'm not much of a gambler, I kind of like my money and feel gambling is throwing it away.  However, on Saturday when I was leaving town to pick up hubby from Johns Hopkins, I stopped at AC&T to get a drink.  I paid for the drink and with my last 4 quarters in my pocket, as an after thought I bought a PowerBall ticket.

Now don't get too excited - no one won the jackpot, but I had 4 NUMBERS!!  I checked the numbers on the interent this morning and I was actually shaking when numbers were lining up!  4 numbers won me $100.00.  I was only one number away from $200,000 or the powerball number away from $10,000 - or of course, one number and powerball number away from $80 million.  4 number excitement became disappointment; but I'll take $100 over nothing at all!  The employees at AC&T were very excited when I cashed it in today.

Hubby's doing as well as expected.  The medication is unreal, and I'm wondering how many are really  necessary?  Painkillers for sure but I can't help but wonder how all these drugs are interacting with each other.

Back to work tomorrow, one person on vacation - hmmmm.......

This & That

It was a very long day back at work and I don't think I made any dent in the paperwork....

Hubby's coming along fine.  They now think it will be Friday before he gets home - no major problems, just making sure everything is the way it should be.

I'm a little distressed this evening.  The neighbors down the street pulled out of their driveway when I got home from work and when I went out to walk the dogs, I notice this little black kitten sitting at their back door.  I've seen it sitting in their windows but never outside.  It's very friendly and even loved my dogs but the poor thing is thin as a rail.  These neighbors rent the house, so as I crossed the street and into a driveway pulls the neighbor that OWNS that rental property.  She stopped to pet Keyser and asked me if I knew who's cat that was.  I told her I had seen it sitting in that house's windows.  I guess you know where this is going, they aren't to have animals per their rental agreement (they've somewhat trashed the house too).  I then told her I was pretty sure they had a dog as well - I've never seen it, but I've heard it barking a few times.  So since they weren't home, she went over, looked in windows and sure enough there was a dog in there.  She thanked me.

But back to the kitten, so this was like around 5:00 p.m.  CC and I went to the movies and I got home a little after 9:00.  Took Keyser for a walk and there's that poor little kitten still sitting there (and during the movie it had poured down rain).  Those people are still not home.  I took him some food down and he gobbled it like he hadn't eaten in days.  Actually, I'd pick him up and just bring him home if it weren't for the fact that he looks a little sickly and I don't want any of my cats catching anything.  He has shelter under a carport, there's puddles from the rain he can drink out of, and I just fed him plus it's not cold out so he should be alright for the night.  But it saddens me when people neglect their animals this way.

An Extremely Long Day

We were up at 3:00 a.m. and on the road by 3:45.  We had to be at Johns Hopkins by 5:30, surgery due to start at 7:30....well not really, that's the time they tell you but technically surgery stared at 8:50 a.m.  Johns Hopkins is very good at surgery though, they give you updates periodically and then the surgeon came out after it was complete.  It was a long wait.  Surgeon came out at about 11:30 a.m.; then I had to wait about another hour for him to get out of recovery.  Once I got to the Neuro Critical Care Unit - I had another hour wait.  At the NCCU visiting is only from 12-2 and then 5-8.  So I finally got to see him about 1/2 hour before the first visiting times, but they left me stay to 3:00.  I was planning to go home, but hubby wanted me to stay longer; so I sat in the lobby and then went back.  I finally left the hospital at 7:00 and arrived home at 8:30.  I've been up and on the go for 17 1/2 hours and with a migraine that decided to show up today.  Boarding the dogs was a smart move; not only couldn't they hold themselves for 17 1/2 hours, I didn't have to worry with them when I got home.

Tomorrow I pick the dogs up at 9:00 a.m. and then my sister and I are heading back down the road again.  I was going to work 12-8, but I called them today and decided to take off - just made more sense.

As far as hubby goes...everything went well and it doesn't look like there will be any complications.  He's in a lot of pain, which is expected, but they had that pretty much under control by the time I left.  He doesn't like laying still, so he moves around a lot - which causes pain so he complains about that (yeah, I know - men when they're not feeling well)....but his spirits seem to be much better this time around.

But now, it's time for me to catch some zzzzzzzzzzzz...........

Stress & More Stress

I keep telling myself that I NEED my job.  It's an ongoing struggle and I don't quite understand how simple things get blown out of proportion.  I don't understand how you can be handed a job description and be told to go over it and make corrections, additions and deletions and go into a raging fit over it.

That happened today.  Apparently whomever did the job descriptions was trying to "fancy" them up.  Whenever the County reviews positions we get clumped together with other offices positions throughout the county even though our jobs have more liability that go with them.  Apparently someone was hoping for them to stand out - so we each had a fancy title.  This made some people mad - RAGING mad.  Why?  I'm not quite sure...obviously we can't "officially" use those titles, so I scratched mine out and put the County title up there.  Others couldn't do that - "Where did these come from?"  "Why weren't we consulted."  "We all have to sit down together and review these."  None of this was needed as the job descriptions had what we do on them - it appeared they were a combination of our assigned duties and what the County has listed for us (which is mainly just my job); one person pointed that out by yelling, "Some of these duties are yours' and *I* don't do that."  My response?  "Take a pen and scratch them out."  Two of them then went storming out of the office for lunch; leaving me and the other somewhat bewildered.  Later I asked 2 "higher ups" their opinions - they said put your official title on there and correct the job description to your duties.  That's what I had already done.  This is one of those days, I just want to go into the file room, close the door and just breathe.  The file room is a very quiet place and when the door is closed - you hear no outside noise.  If there were room - I'd move my office right into there.

On top of work.....hubby's second surgery is scheduled for this Monday (this is the one that was never done last time, due to the problems from the first surgery) and we have to be at Johns Hopkins by 5:30 a.m.  I've had to board the dogs for 2 nights and I can't stay down there this time as we just don't have the money.  He'll be there 3-5 days and it has me distressed that I have to be so far away from him.  He's also been diagnosed with 2 small ulcers (fortunately not bleeding) AND acid reflux AND something else, which as soon as he can remember the name I'll let ya know; but it has something to do with the acid reflux being so bad that the esophagus has attached itself to the stomach or vice versa or something of that nature; my heads too stressed to remember.  Anyways, he'll be on medication for that forever.  Prayers please that the surgery goes through as planned with a quick recovery period.

Harper's Island and Other Things

I was right in who the killer was on Harper's Island, but I was disappointed in the conclusion - actually some of my theories were much better.  For instance:

Uncle Marty's bag of money - this was explained as being money that Uncle Marty was going to give Malcolm to invest in his beer making hobby.  Okay, so why was Uncle Marty walking through the woods in the middle of the night with the money???  Malcolm wasn't expecting the money - someone please explain!

Henry's reason for killing - So we are to believe that since childhood Henry has been in love with Abby and when they were little she said to him "I wish we could live on the island together forever" or something to that effect and he chose to take it literary out of the blue one day as an adult???  During their growing up years, though in love with Abby, he never chose to take the friendship to dating or anything.  Then as an adult one day, he is approached by John Wakefield (the mass murderer everyone presumed was dead) and Wakefield tells him he's his real father and thus that's makes Abby his half sister and then Henry becomes a copycat killer in Seattle (again out of the blue).

Not quite done yet....he then proceeds to propose to his long time girlfriend Trish and then insists that the wedding take place on Harper's Island because that's the only way he knew to get Abby back to the island (Abby's mother was killed in the Wakefield killings years ago and her father sent her away).  And once there, since Abby had told him when they were little she wanted to live there with him forever - he and Wakefield start killing off everyone?  Your own family?  The Bride and her family? Your very best friends?  And really, did he think absolutely no one was ever again going to return to the island?  EVER?

So there really was no rhyme or reason for any of the deaths - which I guess in true pyscho serial killings there isn't...but this show led the viewers to believe that everything would come together - it didn't.  For shame.....

On a happier note - I'm loving my new phone!!  And yes, Kim - you should get one!!

Phones, phones, phones....

I'm rather a fanatic when it comes to technology.  So with the end of our cellular phone contract up this month, I was very into reviewing new phones.

I wanted one that did it all!!  Our service was with AT&T and I had my heart set on an iPhone.  Course I wanted to actually see one first - no such luck, the guy at the AT&T store told me they are only sold at Apple Stores and the larger AT&T stores.  That actually was a lie as Walmart had them.  I went, tried it out and really liked it.  Required a $30 data plan added to the bill, no special price deals on the iPhone either.  Hubby wanted a BlackBerry - again a $30 data plan and though a discounted price for renewing the contract, not as good a deal as they were offering new customers.

We knew of course that our monthly bill would go up, but it just seemed a little out of control.  It was then we began looking at other carriers as we could get better phone deals.  Hubby could get his BlackBerry with any carrier; but I had to kiss my iPhone goodbye <sniff>; but it was what made sense.  We settled on Sprint mostly because they offer the best plans - all inclusive.  Oh if hubby planned on traveling abroad (he doesn't) or needs connected to his work at all costs (he doesn't) he could pay additional for that with his BlackBerry; but since he didn't need that - we made out well, once I decided on what phone I wanted....

I eventually decided on the Samsung Instinct s30 - touch screen with a virtual qwerty keyboard.  I was sold after watching a video of it's many options on the Sprint site.

Once we settled on that we began comparing prices.  It doesn't seem to matter whether you were new or renewing - the best prices were on the internet.

Last time we bought through Wirefly - no real problems other than having to wait for the numbers to get transferred over to the new phones, which seemed to take longer than it should have.  This time around we went through Radio Shack.  The phones were ordered Monday and were shipped today.

It wasn't an overly smooth transistion.  We've learned that when it comes to cell phones, they always want signatures at arrival.  Since we'd both be at work, I listed the business as the shipping address.  This caused a problem because the numbers and billing address are in PA and the shipping address in MD.  But hubby made a phone call today and got it worked out.

I'm just hoping that the numbers transfer as easily.

Harper's Island

Have you been watching Harper's Island???  If not, you're missing a very good show.  The finale is this Saturday (tomorrow night in Canada).  If you haven't been watching don't jump in now or even research it on the internet - wait for repeats or the DVD due out in September.  It's a who-done-it murder mystery, so you can understand why.  If you haven't watched it you may not want to venture further in this post, but if you have been or really don't care then read on.

My guess is Henry because he's the only one that makes sense to me.  I don't know if he and Wakefield are in it together but if so, I guess it would only make sense if he were Wakefield's child.  Anyway, I'm thinking the killings are as follows:

Cousin Ben - since he was already tied up under the boat with oxygen awaiting for the boat to start and chop him to pieces in the very first episode, we don't know a whole lot about him.  I'm guessing his killer is Henry.

Uncle Marty - If Henry is Wakefield's son, then this is where that bag of money Uncle Marty brought with him comes into play.  I believe Uncle Marty was paying off Wakefield to stay away from Henry.  He goes out to meet up with Wakefield and well, Wakefield chops him in half.  Wakefield is the killer here.

Reverend Fain - he was killed so the church killing device could be set.  I'm guessing Henry the killer here.

Kelly - Don't think Henry wanted J.D. to have any fun - Henry killed her.

Lucy - I'm guessing Henry here as well; not sure why though.

Hunter - Henry's fiancee's ex?  Definitely Henry.

Booth - he accidentally killed himself (we saw that happen).

Mr. Wellington - church set-up; thought Henry wasn't good enough for his daughter to marry - definitely Henry here.

Richard - Richard affair with Katherine had Trish upset; plus with Mr. Wellington dead, Richard would run the company.  Henry's the killer here as well.

Malcolm - Took the money bag and had it hidden.  Never bothered to tell anyone about Booth.  Henry is the killer.

Cole Harkin - happened in the woods, very well could be Wakefield.  However, Wakefield seems to thrive on an audience with his killings so could be Henry.

J.D. - Henry covered in blood?   This one is a no-brainer.  Or was Wakefield killing off the last of Henry's adopted family????

Beth - the faceless character most of us forgot about, member of wedding party.  Henry.

Katherine - Wow - everyone thought she was just sitting on the couch; yet she'd been stabbed through the back.  Could be Henry, for the same reason as Richard; but Wakefield seems to know all the secret passages.....

Maggie - we have an audience for this one.  Wakefield.

Sheriff Mills - pretty good chance that it's Wakefield - he had a grudge to fulfill.

Nikki, Shane, Cal - saw them happen - Wakefield.

Chloe - killed herself.

I know there were some other officers killed, but they were minor characters.

I'm so looking forward to the finale Saturday!!!  Please Canadians- no spoilers here!!

The Fourth of July Holiday

Yesterday was a full day in my town.  We walked to the cemetery to see the parade.  No the parade doesn't come thru the cemetery, but it does go past it and well it's a good view from there and many others had the same idea.  On our way through the cemetery I noticed that once again it had been vandalized and the angel's head from the one monument is missing again.  It really distresses me that someone would do this.

We sit on the hill and wait for the parade.  I've lived in this town for 11 years now, but this is the first parade I've gone to; I certainly wasn't expecting Macy's but really, they call this a parade?????

And there's the parade!!  Technically, I should mention that there were more emergency vehicles, antique cars, motorcycles, little cars and church floats advertising their Vacation Bible Schools; oh and there were 2 or 3 majorette groups and some Dairy & Farm Queens but above is pretty much it!  Keyser seemed to enjoy the commotion of the parade but Toby (who is terrified of loud noises) sat with his back to the parade - he wanted to face the way towards home and nearly drug me back when he got the okay we could leave!

Later in the afternoon, we walked down the hill to the festival to get something to eat and look at the craft stands and listen to music.  This results in having to walk back UP the hill (you'd think we'd of learned this lesson last year).  For those that don't know - the hill is straight up and it's very tiring - let's say I had to stop 3 times to catch my breath.  Later in the evening it was back to the cemetery to watch the fireworks.  Again - this wasn't an original idea - the place was loaded with people.  The only thing I found strange were the people that assumed it was okay to spread out blankets on graves and picnic there!!!  Ummm.....there's a whole grave free area  - show some respect!!!  Oh, and the ones that chose to park on graves!!!  People are just dumb.  Fireworks display is always nice, though they claim there were 150 more this year...it seemed to be shorter to me!!

Anniversary #9

Today was my 9 year Wedding Anniversary.

It Was An Interesting Morning...

A lot of people find it odd that I carry my camera with me.  But there are times things happen and I know a lot of people wish they had a camera.  I never have to worry about it.  And if the picture is interesting enough, it makes a good blog...like today.

This morning I walked out my back door to go to work.  On the other side of the alley in my neighbors yard was this:

Let me give you a closer look:

Yep, they were HUGE!!  For those wondering, these are buzzards.  I live in town, so you don't come across this sight too much - mostly in the country and mostly hovering around dead things.  All my cats are accounted for, though I *did* see the neighbor's cat early that morning, I haven't seen him around since - but who could blame him?  When I left for work, the one was on the neighbor's porch sitting on top of the grill and the other was right above it on the roof.

Didn't see them around this evening - thank God!!
